Tile Barn Photographic photography by John Kirkpatrick LRPS

Photgraphic restoration and retouching

Do you have an old family photograph that has been scratched and damaged, or has simply faded over time?

Do you have an old and scratched photograph that is languishing in a drawer, yet remains precious to you?

A photograph can remain valuable even after it has passed its best. Restoration can not only provide an attactive decoration, but also revive fond memories of times gone by. Even recent photographs can benefit from sensitive enhancement to bring out their full potential.

How it works

When you send me your original photograph, it is copied onto my computer system using a high resolution optical scanner. I then use state of the art, industry standard imaging software to adjust and enhance the computer image and repair creases, tears or other damage and to remove any unwanted features. If required, I can also remove or features or background material, including material from other photographs, though this can be time consuming and therefore expensive. The final version the saved to the storage media of your choice in the format you specify, and a printed image is then printed on a photo quality ink-jet printer. The size of the image is approximately 6 inches by 4 inches for an uncropped 35mm slide or print. I can produce large images if required, or even arrange to have the photograph printed and mounted in the same sort of frame used for my limited edition prints. Naturally, larger prints and framing will incur an additional charge. Please contact me for more details.

Your original is returned to you in its original state. I always work with electronic copies, so your photograph is unaffected by any manipulation.

How much will it cost?

Every restoration is unique, and so I cannot give any hard and fast prices without discussing your precise requirements with you. However, I have included a few examples of the type of work I can do here, together with an estimate of the likely cost.

Post and packing

My photo restoration service is operated by post. You are responsible for your originals until they reach me. To safeguard your original, pack them carefully with cardboard stiffening so that they do not suffer additional damage in transit. Please do not send framed photographs, glass plates, lantern slides, or transparencies in glass mounts, as all of these increase the likelihood of damage, and hinder the restoration process.

Usually, I prefer to work with prints rather than negatives, as this generally results in a better quality end result. Working with negatives also usually means that the size of the final image has to be smaller than when working with prints. However, negatives do have an important part to play with respect to copyright.

I will return your originals and the restored copies to you using Royal Mail's Special Delivery service, which is described in more detail here.

Whilst I take every possible care of your originals, by sending your photographs to me you accept that my liability is limited to the value of the original media, and my liability exists only from the time your originals are delivered to me. If you require greater insurance, please discuss this with me before sending your order.
